Roswell Rotary Relays: Partnership with Roswell High School

Hillary Freeman - 2006 Roswell High School RelayEvery spring, for the past eleven years, the Roswell Rotary Club and Roswell High School have sponsored an invitational track meet. The purpose of this sponsorship is to provide a high profile opportunity for high school track & field teams from throughout Georgia to compete against the best in the state. Additionally, with a strong emphasis on relay events, athletes have an opportunity to compete as relay teams, whereas they would normally compete as individuals in individual running events. This builds a spirit of teamwork and creates a highenergy atmosphere.

The Rotary Relays present an opportunity for the service clubs of Roswell High School to work at the event and earn community service points. At the heart of the volunteer corps is the Interact Club. We also have volunteer AAU officials who run the events. Assisting the AAU officials are the service club volunteers and Roswell Rotary Club volunteers. Volunteers measure field events, rake pits, act as lane judges, provide security, total scores, give out medals and trophies, announce events over the PA system, and serve what ever needs there are to run an efficient meet.

2006 RelayRoswell Rotary also provides a hospitality suite for visiting coaches, which includes breakfast and lunch. Various club members in the food service business donate items for breakfast and lunch. Other Rotary Club members provide printing services for the invitations, which are mailed to high schools throughout the state in January; the infield tent for the meet directors; and official T-shirts for the volunteers to wear. The meet is also a fund raiser for the Roswell High School Booster Club. They sell tickets to the event and operate the snack bar at the stadium. The relays are another example of our continuing support of Roswell High School in the areas of leadership, academic achievement and sports.
