The track spikes and unitards will be out in full force at Milton High School April 15 when the only high school in the new city holds its first track invitational.

The meet will bring together three area teams besides Milton – Centennial, Northview and Wheeler – and feature all of the popular track and field events, like relays, long jump, and shot put.

"We're trying to build our track program now that we're in our new home," said Rhea Willis, a team mom and event coordinator.

Peter Vajda, a special education teacher at Milton, is in his first year coaching the program. He said the idea for the event came from talking to other coaches about creating something lasting at the new school.

"We've got this brand new facility, and it is probably the best in the state," he said. "It's time we got something established."

Vajda points to the Roswell Rotary Relays, now in its 11th year and boasting 33 schools and more than 1,000 athletes participating. That is the template for what Milton hopes to accomplish, he said.

"We just trying to bring together top schools at our great facility," he said. "We want to grow this event slowly and have it be a yearly thing that people can look forward to every spring."
