Feb 4-8 2009 Roswell Rotary / Costa Rica / Eye Care and Literacy Project for 2009

Roswell Rotary’s International was in Costa Rica on February 4 – 8, 2009. Five Roswell Rotarians paid their own way to go to Costa Rica this Rotary year to fight literacy and to improve eye care for school age children necessary for them to read. Roswell Rotary International Director, Fate McKinney, organized this year’s Rotary international trip. Other Roswell Rotarian members that were apart of the committee were President Bob Hagan, President Elect Elwyn Gaissert, Ron Redner, Mickey Deaton and Rudy Lind. In Liberia Costa Rica, Roswell Rotarians did over 85 eye exams at an old folks home and provided needed eye glasses to the older adults, after meeting with the local Rotarians of Liberia. In Playa Carrillo, Costa Rica Roswell Rotarians handed out 120 children’s back packs that were donated by Roswell Rotarian, Crawford Hitt and his firm called Edu-Pack. Besides kid backpacks, Roswell Rotary provided eye care examinations to over 45 children and adults gave them free eye glasses to wear in order to help them read better. The local Playa Carrillo contact person Jackie Ruhlow said the Roswell Rotary group was the first group that has come to their community and has given so much to their school children.
