April 11, 2001, Roswell Rotary Club - 50th Anniversary Gala

On April 11, 2001, Roswell Rotary celebrated the 50th year anniversary of the presentation of their charter. The planning committee for this unprecedented event consisted of all the female members of the club, quickly dubbed "The Golden Girls." For months prior to the festivities, the committee met regularly just prior to our regular luncheon meeting, at one round table, to make all the arrangements. The men would saunter over and try their best to figure out what was going on. Finally the special night arrived! Our Golden Gala celebration took place at the Marriott on Windward Parkway in Alpharetta. The black tie evening began in the grand lobby with strolling violinists, "Peachtree Promenade," students from local high schools. Congressman (now Senator) Johnny Isakson attended in honor of his Dad who had been a long time member of the club. After the cocktail hour, guests proceeded into the ballroom for a lavish banquet dinner. President Bucky Cook presided over the program which included a Slide Show of Memories, highlighting members and events from the early years of the club. There was a special tribute to Elwyn Gaissert, Sr., our only charter member. Mr. Gaissert's wife Jewell and their entire family were in attendance and were honored together. In the hallway outside the ballroom, tables were set up with Presidents' scrapbooks from years past. Finally the Rotarians and their guests danced to "Rupert's", one of Atlanta's premier orchestras. Without a doubt, it was a wonderful evening in celebration of our first 50 years!
